Lesson seven: Twisted Textile Samples

I really enjoyed this lesson, I used the photographs of my mood boards in my sketch book to inspire my samples. I have played with a number of techniques, I have played with a lot of platting, pressing, hand sewing and free hand embroidery, both in class and at home.

The only thing here I was struggling with was the fact that all my samples have a really messy feeling to them, as when working to the word twisted, I was platting and twisting most of the fabric, so I think when I develop this further I will, look into creating samples that have a more refined finish.

Below are some photographs of the samples I created and how I created them:

Lesson Six: Shape Realisation

To begin with in this lesson, I really struggled as I haven't done any pattern cutting really, I have made garments from patterns but I haven't ever had to draw them myself and use pattern masters and notches, but because we were working in groups, it made it very easy for me to pick up the basics from my fellow peers.

We were given a garment that represented our word which is twisted, and as you can see it is very fitting. we were asked to make it in three different ways:

1, Out of fabric and sewn on the industrial sewing machines.

2, Out of fabric and be hand sewn together.

3, A really experimental one made out of paper and any way of attaching it together.

We as a group drew out the patterns and cut them out:

I was mainly working on the machine sewn piece, unfortunately this is something I really struggled with as I am not used to the industrial, but I am glad that I did it though, as it gave me some good practice.

Here are people working on their different techniques below:

I was happy with the finished results, after never having done it before, below the photographs include the different experiments carried out with the brown paper and the final sewn garments:

Week Five: Our Power Point Presentation

I found that our power point presentation went well, we were the first out of the groups to go up and present, and although it was nerve racking as, I was pleased with the result.

The only criticism we got for our power point was that in our original slide show we hadn't included images of the final stuck down mood boards, this was because we had brought them with us and believed we would be able to just show the originals, which we did, but they had a point, it didn't feel as if it had a final outcome on the slide show.

After watching every ones PowerPoint's and listening to the feed back that they were receiving I learned a lot about presentation, how key text in a particular font can tie your slide show together to give a professional pattern throughout the slides. If I was going to do this again this is something that I would consider.
